The Velvet Vampire

At a glance...

Oops, somehow this was on my list to review and then I just forgot to. I didn't have much of a reaction to this film in the moment except for the critical shocking moments. The guy getting impaled by the pitchfork, the fact that this vampire has a dune buggy, the crazy mirror! Oh wait it's coming back to me.

I think if I was watching more exploitation films I would have lots of feelings about this. As far as the pastiche of vampires go, this one is really quite fun and a great example of how we understood vampires to be deeply sexual. And the MIRROR! I fucking love that prop and its use in the different sets in this film. You really can just be hard-carried by one very great piece of architecture in a scene.

I'm realizing now that it might have been fun to do a little compare-contrast with Nosferatu to this film, since this one also has a woman protaganist who is primarily relating to the vampire. Maybe I'll come back to this and more of Stephanie's work someday!
